The introduction of Nile perch into the lake ecosystem, eutrophication of the lake, and other changes have led to the extinction of at least 200 cichlid species in Lake Victoria.

Currently, two cichlid species, the Singida tilapia and the Victoria tilapia, are threatened with extinction.
