An excerpt from the article 19 facts about Atacama Desert

There are more than 500 species of plants, characterized by their remarkable adaptability to the extreme environment.

These are mainly herbs and flowers, such as yareta and desert saltgrass (Distichlis spicata). Where there is sufficient moisture, trees grow: chañar (Geoffroea decorticans), pimiento and Chilean algarrobo (Prosopis chilensis).

Cacti, succulents and other dry-climate plants also grow there. In years with sufficient rainfall (like 2015), the desert blooms can be observed from September to November.
