When he was a few years old, the family moved to Erdenet - now the second largest city in Mongolia after Ulaanbaatar - where his father was sent to build a mining plant. The family stayed together in Erdenet for four years. Volodymyr completed the first grade there, after which he and his mother returned to Kryvyi Rih.
His father stayed in Mongolia for several more years.
