The scientist's body was cremated, and his ashes placed in an urn were thrown into the sea by Oppenheimer's wife.

Oppenheimer's wife died in 1972. The scientist's ranch in New Mexico was inherited by his son Peter, and his beach house in the Virgin Islands by his daughter Toni, who committed suicide in 1977, at the age of 32, by hanging herself from a beam in the cottage.
