Traditionally, the Forbidden City is divided into two parts.

• The Front Court, also known as the Front Yard, located on the south side, was used for ceremonial purposes.
• The Inner Court, or Back Palace, to the north, was the residence of the emperor and his family and was used for daily state affairs.
