Portugal has the fifth largest exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in Europe, the third largest in the European Union, and the twentieth largest in the world.

This is a maritime zone in which the Portuguese have special rights to explore and exploit marine resources. It covers 1.727.408 square kilometers.
