Portugal is characterized by high levels of biodiversity, both on land and in the sea.

There are six terrestrial ecoregions:

• temperate mixed forests of the Azores
• Cantabrian mixed forests
• evergreen forests of Madeira
• Iberian sclerophyll forests
• northwestern mountain forests
• southwestern xerophilic and mixed forests
