St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited town in the United States. It was founded on 28th August 1565, by Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Its name corresponds with the feast of St. Augustine of Hippo, which was celebrated on the day the colony was founded. The Spanish ceded the ownership to the US in 1819 in exchange for $5 million. Today, its population reaches 12.000, and it is home to the oldest American school, as well as 33 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
