The objectives and challenges that players encounter usually follow the room’s theme and have varying degrees of difficulty.

Typical themes and plot threads often found in puzzle rooms include:

  • A horror movie atmosphere (players are tasked with getting out of the room before a monster, vampire, zombie, or serial killer shows up inside)
  • A criminal task to be unraveled (finding a specific object in the room that is, for example, evidence in the investigation)
  • The reality of movies, fairy tales or computer games (ancient civilizations, Pharaoh’s pyramid)
  • Geographical regions (jungle, desert, island)
  • Historical circumstances (World War II, Cold War)
