Hot dogs are typical representatives of fast food. They are prepared swiftly and consumed even faster. Even though the fashion for eating hot dogs spread across the world from the U.S., the dish itself was invented most probably in western Europe.

The origin of the hot dog remains a mystery to this day.
It was probably invented by two Austro-Hungarian citizens, Emil Reichel and Sam Ladany, after they migrated to Chicago. They started selling their dish at the 1893 World’s Fair. Nowadays it is known as a classic Chicago hot dog. It’s made from all-beef sausage in a poppy bun, with green tomato-based relish, tomatoes, pickles, and onions, topped with mustard. Reichel and Ladany’s meat processing company, called Vienna Beef, operates constantly, and still uses the original recipe.

The Germans claim hot dogs were invented in Frankfurt am Main in 1487.
The third version of the hot dog origin says of the German butcher Johann Georghehner, who, supposedly, developed his dish at the end of the 17th century and traveled to Frankfurt am Main to promote his invention.
