Facts about French Bulldog

Bulldogs were bred in the United Kingdom since the beginning of the 19th century. Over time, some smaller individuals, weighing no more than 11 kg, started appearing. Due to the Industrial Revolution, workers from Nottingham started migrating to Normandy, France, taking miniature Bulldogs with them.

The term derives from Ancient Greek and means “short head.” The well-known examples are Bulldogs, Pugs, Pekingese, and Persian cats.

They grow up to 27–35 centimeters and weigh an average of 9 to 14 kg. Bitches reach 24 to 32 centimeters in length and weigh an average of 8—13 kg.

The “rose ears”, typically folded over, are common among the English Bulldogs, and once upon a time were a typical trait of the Frenchies. However, ever since they made their way to the U.S., they started being known for their “bat ears.” The American Kennel Club does not recognize rose-eared Bulldogs as a breed standard.

These are white, white and brindle, brindle, brindle and white, white and fawn, fawn, fawn and white, fawn brindle, and cream.

Their body composition prevents them from being able to swim.

Higher voices and short, accusatory comments make them mopey. On the other hand, they thrive in positive reinforcements.

They tend to get stubborn at times.

Their pushed-in snouts cause a wide range of breathing problems. There have been cases when Bulldogs did not survive the flight, because of the deadly combination of their snouts, high-stress levels, and warm temperatures.

Apart from breathing problems, Frenchies do not regulate their body temperature efficiently, thus prefer a daily walk, rather than excessive exercise.

Their hips are narrow, so breeding requires artificial insemination, and puppies are delivered through the caesarean section.
